Last week I was lucky enough to speak at an event that was all about Digital Marketing. We had an audience of just under 100 which was fantastic! My talk was called “Social Media – The Clue is in the name”.
And indeed it is! Despite us being well into 2016 and the fact that you can’t go many places these days without being surrounded by people immersed in social media on some device or other, I still come across business owners who ask the question “What’s the point of social media?”.
The point is just that. That’s where today’s society hang out. And guess what – your customers are part of today’s society! One of the most important things to consider when working on what marketing you will choose to do for your business is where are your target market.
True, not everyone on the planet uses social media (although if Mark Zuckerberg achieves his vision, they may well soon!), but, according to Statista, by 2018, the number of worldwide users of social media sites is expected to reach over 2.5 billion. That’s about a third of the world’s population. I’m going to hazard a guess that some of your target market is amongst this ginormous figure. So – if they’re there, then perhaps you should be too. If you’re not there engaging with them, who is?
But remember… The point of social media is that it’s social. (The clue is in the name you see?) Social means two-way interaction.
So go ahead. Seek out your target market, aka those people you want to be having conversations with. And go and have a conversation with them. Because that’s the whole point!
